Axel was awakened by a noise like thunder or waves crashing on the shore of the sea. He didn't know how long he lay unconscious. Then he heard a human voice. He heard his name and the word "lost". It was his uncle's voice calling him. The professor and Hans were in a big hall. All the passages led into it. The professor told Axel to call again and he would calculate the distance between them. The Professor calculated that Axel was 6 kilometers away from them.
The professor told Axel to walk down the passage to find them. The slope of the passage was very steep. Axel started to slide down the passage, but he went faster and faster and couldn't stop. His head hit a sharp rock and he lost consciousness again. When Axel awoke, he found himself lying against a rock and his uncle watching him. The professor gave a cry of joy. He was pleased that Axel was still alive. Then Axel slept for a long time.
When Axel awoke, he could see strange light coming from somewhere although there was no lamps. It was unlike sunlight or moonlight. It was cold and white. Then Axel saw a strange sea. His uncle told him that he named it "The Lidenbrock Sea".
There was a beach of golden sand. There were waves. There was a sky with white clouds. High above the clouds, there was a roof of rock. It was a huge cave. Along the shore of that strange sea, there was a forest of giant trees. They were mushrooms that looked like giant umbrellas.
There were also other plants which were much taller and bigger than those on the surface of the Earth. On the shore, they also found bones of animals which had long disappeared from the Earth. They also saw the tide rise and fall. The professor decided to cross the Lidenbrock Sea to explore it. So, he asked Hans to cut down some trees and tie them together to make a raft.
